The Best Dessert in All the Land

bestdesertever

This may not be as impressive as my usual lunch, but I assure you that this is the “best dessert in all the land” =).

What we see here is not only obnoxiously (can I even use that word in this context?) delicious, but incredibly nutritious- and yes I know that sounds corny but I mean it anyway.

So what is it, and what’s in it?

Well, I don’t really have a name for it aside from the title of this post, but it’s essentially a concoction of nutritionally packed foods that taste awesome at the same time.

From left to right we have

  • About a third of a dark (77%) organic chocolate bar broken up into smaller pieces
  • A handful of whole natural almonds (as close to raw as you can commonly buy)
  • Dark chocolate covered cocoa nibs
  • raw chopped pecans
  • Organic Vanilla Coconut Milk Icecream
  • Raw Locally Grown Orange Blossom Honey

What’s the end result nutritionally speaking?

A dessert that’s packed with healthy monounsaturated and saturated fat- none of which is heavily processed.

The saturated fat from the coconut in particular is an incredibly rich source of MCTs (medium chain trigliceryides).  MCTs are really hard to come by (after weaning off breast feeding), yet critically important for long term health. The MCTs from coconut fat have also been shown to speed up the metabolism and burn off excess calories.

High levels of monounsaturated and saturated fat have also been shown to help balance hormone levels (meaning increases in testosterone) which is great for those looking to build muscle through high intensity training.

The organic chocolate is loaded with anti-oxidants (and some more yummy fat, which will do anything BUT make you gain body fat), and the nuts are also bringing a good amount of protein into the dessert.

Finally, the sweeteners used in this dessert are low on the glycemic index (which means they wont spike blood insulin levels unnecessarily high, you know, the fat storing trump hormone) in comparison to other sweeteners. This includes both the agave nectar within the coconut ice cream, as well as the raw honey (commonly cooked honey is much higher on the glycemic index and lacks other vitamin/mineral benefits as well) drizzled on top.

In the end, you have a “so good it’s hard to describe” tasting dessert, packed to the max with loads of solid nutrients that wont spike blood insulin levels too high (in comparison to other desserts, it’s by leaps and bounds), and the density of calories is even somewhat offset by the presence of MCT’s in the coconut oil.

The only downside is, it’s not cheap. But hey, did you really expect the best dessert in all the land to be dirt cheap?

Eat this guilt free whenever you like and let me know if you have any other ideas for modifying it

    Dream,

Where do you get the coconut milk ice cream? I found some Turtle Mountain ice cream at a store nearby but they only seemed to have the soy versions which don’t sound anywhere near as amazing.

I’ve been cooking with coconut milk recently and adding it to smoothies and it is pretty incredible.

    Hey Nicky

Yeah stay away from soy icecream, it’s no where near as nutritious.

I find my coconut ice cream at Whole Foods, and more recently at Publix (a common and rather generic grocery store that does not focus on health foods like Whole foods).

Keep searching, I’m sure you’ll come across it.

Coconut milk in a smoothie sounds good to =). Coconut is awesome period.
