Thoughts on Saturated Fat

Comments { 4 }

I was reading over a post by Mark S. yesterday on Saturated Fats. You can find it here.

While reading it, something indirectly hit me. It’s pretty simple, yet profound.

Let’s piece things together and take a look.

A. Conventional meats (from animals fed foods that do not belong in their diet such as corn and soy) have a higher level of saturated fat than meat from pasture fed/free range animals.

B. Dietary intake of saturated fat (beyond minimal levels because saturated fat is recognized as an essential nutrient) is scorned by mainstream nutritional wisdom. It is seen as a major source of heart disease, when in fact it has the ability to promote heart health.

C. Corn and Soy are in so many modern foods it’s not even funny. These 2 substances (a grain and a bean) are nearly unavoidable. Even avoiding them on a grand scale isn’t easy because as we’ve just discussed, conventional animal products are from animals fed these same foods. Even farm raised fish are fed corn and soy- and animal products are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to finding corn and soy in the foods you eat.

Fun fact, corn is not part of the natural diet for any animal on the planet. It’s not even found in the wild.

Considering the massive, massive intake of corn and soy in the Standard American Diet- and the subsequent influx of disease, including heart disease- one would conclude we would use common sense and associate those same foods with heart disease since they, without question, cause those same problems in domesticated animals.

In fact if you’d like real life proof of this, go to your local “health” foods store and compare organic omega 3 enriched eggs with conventional cheapo eggs.

It’s kinda scary actually to see the difference in nutrition between the two.

The fact is conventional wisdom has turned a blind eye to this. The buck is passed to dietary saturated fat directly instead of what actually causes the rise in saturated fat (and an endless list of other problems) in any animal that consumes foods outside of it’s natural food matrix- mass produced corn and soy in particular.

It’s glaringly obvious. Corn and soy, result in increased levels of saturated fat in animals- including us. Eating saturated fats directly, and assuming they end up “clogging arteries”, is just bad science, and outright ridiculous IMO.

It’s baffling to see this debated- when the proof is sitting around in plain sight in the form of domesticated animals suffering the same problems.

The fact that researchers (funded by collective billions of dollars) are scratching their heads, when it only takes a simple trip to the grocery store to verify the source of the problem, is even more perplexing.

It makes you wonder where all the money that is donated to heart disease is really going.

Amen to that! It is awesome that a hot fella such as yourself has caught on to this and understands it as well. Thanks for puttin the word out more Dream!

On a side note I found this statement intriguing “Fun fact, corn is not part of the natural diet for any animal on the planet. It’s not even found in the wild.” THAT is SO WEIRD especially given that entire cultures have sprung up around this food (namely Mexican and Indian). It is strange how humanity has taken great pains to separate itself from the rest of the animal kingdom and often not realized how detrimental that has been for the health of our own species.

Have you seen the film ‘King Corn’? It’s a pretty awesome look into the Corn industry as 2 college grads move to Iowa and grow an acre themselves. You would definitely enjoy the information as well as the different perspectives it reveals.

    Hey guys

    Thanks for the kind words.

Nicky I saw the trailer for King Corn on Mark Sissons blog, looks interesting. I recently skimmed through the omnivore’s dilemma as well which seemed to point out the same things that film does- but I’ll check it out someday when I have a moment.

Also, something I probably should have mentioned in the original post- I recently skimmed through the Paleo Diet (awesome book) but the author draws similar conclusions on saturated fat as we did above.

Since wild animals have lower levels of saturated fat (because they are non grain fed) it’s instantly associated with being BAD- a false assumption IMO, but surprising to come from someone writing a book titled The Paleo Diet.
