Pre, During, and Post Workout “Nutrition”

It’s funny, I get a lot of people that ask me about what I do for “pre workout” and “post workout” nutrition – and my answer is almost always the same – nothing (admittedly I often have a slight grin on my face).

This usually leaves people a bit confused, with the most common follow up question of “why do you ignore it?”.

“I don’t.”

As far as I’m concerned, doing “nothing” (more in a second) is the best thing to be doing concerning food as it relates to my workout. Hence, I don’t “ignore” it – if anything I’m respecting my body to the highest degree.

Let’s dig in, shall we?

Pre Workout Nutrition

Check this out – I have gone into virtually every workout for the past four months, on at least, a twelve hour fast (usually closer to twenty hours). By “fast”, I mean I haven’t eaten in X amount of time.

This sounds extreme no matter how you spin it, but I assure you it is not. For…

Follow Up Interview With Bill De Simone

As promised, my latest interpretation of mixing the concepts between MAE and Body by Science.

Also, be sure to check this interview out from Conditioning Research.

It’s a great follow up to my recent interview with Bill about Moment Arm Exercise. New videos from Bill are included at the bottom of the interview as well (regarding congruent exercise for the chest).

Witnessing A Riot

In the spring of 2008 I witnessed a “small” riot in east Orlando.

It was the first time I had ever seen such a thing, and it’s something I’ll never forget.

It was a Friday night. At a local bar named “Scoop”, with two friends (one of which was a speaker at The 21 Convention).

Usually Friday nights were packed at this bar – that night, sort of. Perhaps 80% of the usual crowd (a few hundred people).

About 1am, a few people start shouting at each other, maybe 30 feet from my friends and I (we are all outside in a courtyard style area, but still “in” the bar).

It hardly takes a few minutes before various people start shoving…

The Down Low on Cardio (And Latest Thoughts)

Estimated read time: 7 minutes

I’ve written about “cardio” from time to time on this blog, but not much recently. This post will serve as a primer to catch people up to speed, as well as detail new ideas about “cardio”.

Let’s start strong, shall we?

1. The conventional notion of “cardio” is a complete and total fallacy.

It is every bit as erroneous as limiting saturated fat in the diet and eating copious amounts of grain and other carbohydrate rich “foods”.

In no way, shape, or form is low intensity* physical activity optimal or even necessary for best…

Health Care and Swine Flu Thoughts

I’ve gotten a lot of questions recently about Swine Flu and my thoughts on “health care” via Facebook and e-mail.

Rather than read my own take, here are some links that express my views well, and in some cases much better than I could have, had I written my own content on the subjects.

“Health Care”

Kill This Bill

Kurt G. Harris MD

Excellent, excellent read. Do not skip this one.

To a slightly lesser extent, this is also a great read

Whole Foods and the Healthcare Uprising

Keith Norris

“Swine Flu”

All articles from Primal Wisdom (Don Matesz). Better read collectively than selectively.

How I Came to My Opinion of Vacines

New Immunization Guidelines– Who Makes Them?

Paleodiet and Polio Virus

Swine Flu Protection

On a different but not entirely unrelated note, this is hilarious.

Interview With Bill De Simone: Author of Moment Arm Exercise

Moment Arm Exercise

Bill De Simone is the author of Moment Arm Exercise, a revolutionary book on the often overlooked bio-mechanics of exercise. I read the book many months ago, have applied my own personal understanding of the concepts, and have reaped results from those actions. I believe what Bill offers not only increases the safety of the way one can exercise, but also brings about better results.

Below is an interview I performed with Bill recently (various links have been added by me).

*Bill, these are my own words. Can you briefly tell us a bit more about yourself?

Currently I have a personal training studio, which opened a little over three years ago. I’ve been self-employed as a fitness guy since 2001.

Response to HIV/Aids Presentation at UCF

This is not officially a blog post, but was a journal I wrote for a class at UCF. I thought it was worth sharing here on TDL.

Anthony Johnson

Response to HIV/Aids Presentation at UCF

This was yet another misinformed presentation given in class. Every week, we hear a presentation about an important topic, and the majority of information presented is misguided at best and downright harmful at worst.

Today’s presentation about AIDS and HIV surpassed all others in my eyes however. I don’t believe I’ve ever witnessed something quite like it and I feel obligated to speak up for the sake of my peers. And for the record, I am not an expert on AIDS or HIV, merely someone who has knowledge from other fields, and a limited understanding of…
