Dear Dream: What is P90X and Does P90X Really Work?

Can you tell where this post is heading?

UPDATE-  This is a highly controversial post that has been discussed in depth. It is also a poor representation for me as a writer. As a result, I have disabled commenting on this post, but please feel free to read the discussion, and check out the new updated post on strength training and P90x. Thank you.

What is P90X?

P90X is an incredibly (currently) popular DVD set created by Tony Horton. It has spread like a virus across the internet- primarily on discussion forums and YouTube from what I’ve seen (and am tired of seeing).

According to Wikipedia

The P90X system is a 90-day workout routine that uses a technique called “muscle confusion,” a technique that prevents exercise plateauing by varying exercises over days and weeks such that the body has difficulty adapting. The system includes strength training, cardio, and

The Dream Way Lives Once Again

tdw

Not everyone knows this, but I spent the first few years of my college life approaching women at bars and clubs. And by spent, I mean a minimum of 4-5 nights a week- at one point in time I went out every single night for months on end. I did this without a drop of alcohol, and often times “flyin solo”- interestingly enough this is where most of my success has come from, even to this day.

I set out to do this primarily because I had not enjoyed success with women growing up. In fact, before finding the “pickup community”- as popularized by best selling books like The Game and Vh1′s hit show The Pickup Artist- which motivated me to take these steps in college, I had kissed a total of 3 women.

A Confused University and My Experiences with the UCF Rec and Wellness Center

There’s a post I’ve been meaning to get out for a few weeks now, a post that I originally wanted to title “UCF Absurdities”. Yesterday however, the insight I wanted to share sort of compounded upon itself after “new light” was shed on the problem.

Or, IOW, the severity of just how “in the dark” most of the world is when it comes to proper exercise and nutrition (anything and everything?) really sunk in.

Yesterday I had the unique opportunity to meet with most of the people who run the UCF Rec and Wellness Center (the gym). I had this opportunity because for over 1 year I was a group “exercise” instructor there- exercise in quotations because I no longer consider “group fitness” to actually be a legitimate modality of exercise.

Immediately after this meeting I had the privilege of attending my Summer B four hour session of Nutrition class @…

My Latest Interview on Eseduce + Last Chance to Grab Tickets @ Current Price

I had an interview with Mack Tight on Eseduce yesterday. Check it out here.

Also, tickets for The 21 Convention (2009)- July 23rd to the 26th- are currently $249.95. That price block ends June 23rd, so get your ticket (if you haven’t already) before the price rises to it’s final amount leading up to the event.

Tickets can be found here- powered by Eventbrite.

Also, exercise and nutrition only tickets are still available for $40 (on the same ticket page). They are for sale all the way up to the event, but there is a tight cap on how many I can sell so we don’t overpack the convention room.

An Experiment in Lifestyle Design- Selling My Car for a Think Bike Fun

thinkbike

So…how do I begin?

If it isn’t obvious by now, I sold my Jeep Grand Cherokee and purchased a bicycle- but not just any bike, an electric hybrid “pedal assist” bicycle.

Sound crazy? It is, a little =). Let’s continue Q an A style.

Question “numero uno”- is this a short term or long term change?

Neither, it’s a choice I made for an undetermined duration. It’s unlikely I’ll ride a bicycle for the rest of my life… but there is no telling when I’ll get a car again.

Was this done by choice or necessity?

By choice. I’m sure a lot of people immediately…

Getting Rid of GetResponse- No More “Dreamails”

I read a book not long ago titled “Purple Cow” by Seth Godin (the second book of his I’ve read). It’s a great read about being remarkable in…well anything. The book focuses on business though- on why you should be remarkable, how, and why “marketing” itself sucks.

Marketing should be built into the product or service you offer. How?

Make it so AWESOME people can’t stop talking about it. This (not so coincidentally) frees up a lot of revenue from typical marketing/advertising campaigns, and allows you to put it back into developing/improving your product or service.

This is very counter intuitive, so it sat well with me.

Day’s later, I took action. I began work on what is now a part of my most successful venture ever- The 21 Convention. The site is essentially a cross between TED.com and AskMen.com (well, if AskMen were actually useful that is).

The21Convention.com is home to the world’s largest collection of dating advice in video format. The traffic it has generated via word of mouth is…

New Exercise and Nutrition Only Ticket Available for The 21 Convention

The topics I’ve blogged about over the years have really attracted quite a diverse readership. My two biggest focuses though have been dating advice/personal transformation, and proper exercise/nutrition. I think many people stay tuned with this blog (and the convention site) for both, but I think it’s safe to say that many readers are only here for one or the other.

The annual convention I host also reflects this diversity in interests, however the tickets available do (did?) not. So, due to recent “popular demand” (man that sounds pretty cool), I now offer an “exercise and nutrition only” ticket for the 2009 convention.

This is for those of you who are interested in seeing Drew and I speak about those topics, and don’t feel like dropping an extra $200 dollars for other speakers and unrelated topics.

Drew and I will be speaking mid afternoon (specifics released closer to the event to attendees only) on Saturday July 26th in the Crowne Plaza of Downtown Orlando. There should be well over 3 hours of stage time, and we…

Meeting Mystery and Matador of Vh1′s The Pickup Artist

In the Spring of 2008 I had the opportunity to meet Mystery and Matador of Venusian Arts and Vh1′s The Pickup Artist fame in downtown Orlando.

They were scheduled to be in town for a few days while on one of their workshops. While in town they decided to offer a free talk to local people who were interested- of course, this was something I could not pass up.

Not only was I interested in what they had to say (Mystery has relentlessley been hailed as the world’s best “pick up artist”), but obviously I was interested in having them speak at the annual convention I host right here in Orlando.

I had talked to Matador previously on the phone about it, but meeting in person is always a lot more productive from my experience.

So, I went to the Marriot of downtown Orlando for their talk.

Not surprisingly, it was pretty good. Matador in particular is a really charismatic guy and a great public speaker.

If you’re wondering about…

Dream Vitality Book Update

Most of you probably know I’m working on a book, but some of you that are new to the blog may not.

The book I’m working on is my second. It’s going to cover “proper” exercise and nutrition (and their practical application). It’s titled Dream Vitality.

I’ve been working on it for months now, but in the process of ensuring the information within the book was “correct”, I happened to stumble upon hordes of new information on exercise (my views on nutrition have changed little since the fall of 2008).

I originally wanted to release the book in time for the convention, however I am far more interested in “doing it right” than rushing the book to meet an unnecessary deadline.

I also want to have a killer speech to go along with the book, and last year’s does not meet my current standards. I know I can do better, and will in a few weeks.

So, expect the book to release sometime after the 2009 convention. It will cover both exercise and nutrition, as well as some other…

My Current HIT Routine

Since this post was released, the most frequent question I’ve been asked is “what do you do!?”. Well, today Is the day I’m going to get into my current routine- but I do so with caution.

What I do is NOT necessarily what’s best for you, and certainly NOT what you should start with. If you are new to high intensity training and want a program to start with I highly recommend picking up Body by Science and performing the “big five” for 2-3 months about once a week.

It’s as simple as it gets- and it’s damn effective.

2 pulling exercises, 2 pushing, and a compound leg exercise. It works your entire body- even the muscles of the neck, abs, lower legs, and forearms indirectly.

However, I’m about 5 months into HIT and my routine has evolved based off of the abundant resources available on the subject that I’ve had the opportunity to read- and I know there are guys reading this who’ve been working out high intensity for months as…
